In 1977, Tim Ahearn decided that it was time to try his hand at his own business. With very little working capital, Ahearn Equipment was founded in a dark stone basement in North Brookfield. For the first couple of years, the one-man service shop was dependent on word of mouth advertising and long hard hours. Tim became known for taking repair jobs that many other businesses had turned down. His expertise, honesty and excellent customer service quickly earned him a strong reputation in the local agricultural industry. Today, these principles remain as the cornerstone of Ahearn Equipment Inc.
Over the next decade Ahearn Equipment grew into a thriving, small Farm equipment dealership. Tim’s wife, Donna, left her teaching job and, with little training, found herself running the back-end operations of a small corporation. They soon realized however, that running a retail operation in a rural location was going to put serious limitations on future growth. As a result, Tim and Donna found a 7 acre plot of land on Route 9 in Spencer, which in 1989 became the new location of Ahearn Equipment. However, shortly after purchasing the land and building a 12,000 square foot building, the country fell into an economic recession. Coupled with that, the Central Massachusetts agricultural industry was dwindling.
Serious challenges would have to be overcome if the business was going to survive. The company began focusing on landscaping and consumer markets in lieu of a rapidly vanishing farm equipment market. Ahearn Equipment also opened their doors as a NAPA auto parts store, creating additional income and valuable store traffic. With a keen industry sense, and extremely disciplined business practices, Tim and Donna were able to pull their company through some of its most difficult times. As the millennium came to a close Ahearn Equipment had finally established itself as a long term player in the outdoor power equipment industry.
As the company began to experience serious growth, sons Jeremy and Josh graduated from college and came back into the business, eventually filling key roles in the service and sales departments. Long time employee, Howard Eddy, stepped up to fill the role of parts manager. These people, along with the efforts of many other loyal employees, have greatly contributed to the company’s success in recent years. Ahearn Equipment is a corporation built around its people, filled with dedicated personnel who share in the company’s goals and visions.
Today, Ahearn Equipment Inc. employs over 60 people, and last year, grossed nearly 10 million in sales. In August of 2006 a 12,000 square foot addition to the existing route 9 building was completed, adding valuable space. The Ahearn product line includes over 50 quality brands such Kubota, Cub Cadet, Stihl, and NAPA. On display in the spacious new showroom, customers can view everything from tractors, to mowers to chainsaws and even excavators along with auto parts. The experienced sales, service and parts teams cater to all outdoor power equipment users from the novice to the professional. Most importantly however, the company still operates on its founding principles, expertise, honesty and excellent customer service.
